The United Kingdom has implemented a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement effective January 8, 2025. This measure is designed for travelers from non-visa countries who do not currently require a visa to enter the UK.

Key Details of the ETA Requirement

• Who Needs an ETA:
  • All non-visa nationals, including U.S. and Canadian citizens,  traveling to or through the UK for purposes such as tourism, business, family visits, or short-term study (up to six months) must obtain an ETA.
  • This requirement also applies to those transiting through the UK, even if they do not pass through border control. However, you do not need an ETA to transit through the UK if you will not pass through border control (‘airside’ transit). But be careful if you will change terminals in the UK which may require you to go through immigrations and would require an ETA.
• Who Does Not Need an ETA:
  • British and Irish citizens.
  • Individuals with a valid UK visa or those who have permission to live, work, or study in the UK.
  • Travelers coming from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man do not need an ETA if they are entering from these locations.
• Application Process:
  • Travelers can apply for the ETA online or via a dedicated app. Applications should be submitted at least 72 hours before travel to ensure timely processing.
  • The cost of the ETA is £10, and it is valid for multiple entries over a period of up to two years or until the passport expires.
• Future Expansion:
  • Sarting April 2, 2025, the ETA requirement will extend to most European countries. Applications for these travelers will open on March 5, 2025.

This new travel authorization system aligns with global trends in border security and aims to streamline entry for eligible travelers while maintaining safety protocols. The United States has had a similar program for foreign visitors for over a decade. The ETAs allow governments to better control foreign traveler in and out of their countries.

How long it takes

You will usually get a decision within 3 working days, but you may get a quicker decision.

Occasionally, it may take longer than 3 working days.

Group applications

Each person must apply separately.

You may get a decision at a different time from others in your group, even if you applied at the same time.

If you need to travel soon

You must apply for an ETA before you travel to the UK. You can travel to the UK while waiting for a decision.

After you apply

You will get an email confirming you have got an ETA. It will be linked to the passport you applied with.

Your ETA lasts for 2 years. You can travel to the UK as many times as you want during that time.

Entering the UK

An ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. You still need to either:

• see a Border Force officer
• use an ePassport gate, if you are eligible
